The 7-Day Challenge to STOP Family Separation

One of the tenets of The Schoolbox Project’s Child Protection Protocol is to ensure that displaced children are never separated from their parents. From a child's perspective, family separation is one of the most traumatic and devastating impacts of war, and can even be more traumatic than witnessing death or being personally injured.

When separated from their families, minors are at severe risk of exploitation, trafficking, abuse, and death. ICE has just conducted a massive worksite raid at seven locations in six cities in Mississippi, leading to the arrest of nearly 700 immigrants and the largest single-state worksite enforcement action in our nation’s history. By now you have probably seen the viral video of the devastated children left behind to sleep in a gym, after no one came to pick them up from school yesterday.

As an organization dedicated to protecting children, we condemn this shocking and inhumane policy.  Join our 7-Day Challenge starting 8/12/19 to help #stopfamilyseparation.

The 7-DAY CHALLENGE

DAY 1: The 7-Day Challenge starts NOW. Your action item: At this very moment, children are being subjected to significant abuse and neglect in our nation’s Border Patrol facilities. This link will take you to the sworn declarations of many of these children taken in the Flores class action lawsuit to end the mistreatment of immigrant children. Powerful forces are trying to silence these voices. Take some time to read what is happening in their own words and then choose a way to amplify them. You will find a list of possible ideas on the site. You can start with the photo in the comments below to share or use as your profile picture. CLICK HERE to read.

DAY 3: Today's action is about bearing witness. There is a growing network of rapid response volunteers forming to help your neighbors and you can be part of it! Look up how to become a "legal observer" in your community. You should find a variety of online resources and in-person trainings offered in your community. In these short in-person trainings, you will learn how to verify ICE activity, document and film ICE raids, and help ensure that the law is being followed. You will also learn what your rights are when interacting with law enforcement. Note that the role of legal observers is not to stop ICE activity, but to help lawyers in the court process by documenting any possibly illegal detentions. Every single one of us can provide real-time assistance both to those facing deportation and family members left behind.

DAY 2 : Does your bank, favorite business, or local government have an investment in family separation at the border? Find out and demand they #defund #familyseparation. JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC Bank, Barclays, and US Bank fund the corporations that keep family separation in business, particularly GEO, Caliburn, and CoreCivic. Nobody should profit from the pain and suffering of some of the world’s most vulnerable children. Take your banking elsewhere and demand local governments do the same. Local Action: Today we’ll be meeting from 10:30 to 12:00 at the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to continue our demand to #divest county funds from Wells Fargo. Click HERE to check out the progress already made and what’s next.
